You know everyone's favorite Nick's waitress, Natalie, right? Her Dad was my swing choir director up in Fort Wayne, Snider High School. Fittingly enough, we called him Mr. Nick. He taught us Hoagy Carmichael's Rocking Chair, pointing out the composer was an important Hoosier songwriter. Fueled by that, and my own Dad's frequent playing of The Nearness of You on the family piano (another Hoagy tune), when I finally moved to Bloomington I got very excited about being in Hoagy's town. Found his gravesite in Rosehill Cemetery and visited frequently, read his TWO autobiographies multiple times, and learned as many of his tunes as I could - the more obscure, the better!
Hoagy tells the story in his autobiography (maybe both of them, can't recall), that he wrote Rocking Chair in the Bloomington jail over nite when he got arrested for crashing his jalopy in the same cemetery that he is now buried in! He crashed because he was inebriated from the home brew that he had bought from Granny Campbell who made it and sold it. Granny Campbell was always sitting in her rocking chair when Hoagy came to call... Great story! I hope you enjoy our ROCKIN' version!
