I chose a song by Chris Kupersmith, founder of the HooMuCo, long-time beloved musician in Bloomington, Indiana. I have seen him haunting the streets of Bloomington as long as I can remember and found a true friend and musical sibling in him. I once studied his band for a project I did in a course where we were asked to witness and chronicle a group of people learning something new together. I gained a new sense of respect for him during this project. He had written a new song and managed to lead the band members through it while also employing an open-ness to their ideas for lyrics, parts, and song structure that made the full group feel an ownership of the project by the end. I learned a lot about teaching during this experience, about ownership and motivation and communication.
He is a true teacher in that way, and has found a way to collect and motivate people according to their interests. And thus the HooMuCo, of course, came from his brain.*** The Tall Cornstalks.
Wild Violins has always been one of my favorites because of the harmonies. Some of my favorite musical moments are those spent with a bunch of people singing harmonies, and Kupe is often there with his eyes shut tight making them work. My daughter, Esther Winterman, joined for the backups and harmonies on this version and so, of course, it is all the more special to me now.
Thanks for a hell of a lot of great music and conversation over the years. Love ya, Kupe!!
***Editor's Note: In fact, HooMuCo did not come from Mr. Koopersyth's brain, but we do appreciate that he is willing to act as our liaison on a volunteer basis.
